Danger Finally Listens to Deaf Sidekick Users About Fonts!

October 23rd, 2007 · 14 Comments

I would like to share with you what I learned today.  I was looking at the new Sidekick LX that was released today. Guess what? The Hiptop OS that comes with the Sidekick LX now features adjustable font sizes! No more squinting at your Sidekick because you can’t change its font!  Finally Danger has listened to its deaf customers! The complaints about the small fonts on Sidekick devices go back more than five years!

The Deafpagers.com Blog will have a complete in-hand review of T-Mobile’s newest Sidekick, the LX, also known as SK4 sometime next month.  Watch out for this review! If you have any questions regarding the LX, feel free to ask away and we’ll do our best to answer in our review.

My fantasy is for a pager that will allow you to plug in a key board.

Yes, I know sidekicks already come with with their own keyboard — but those are small keyboards clearly designed for thumb-typing only. Perfectly fine for a short text message here and there, or a short email message, or for keying in the URL for a web page. But this little keyboard is not so fine if you are on the run and suddenly need to have a much longer, live phone conversation with someone, or need to write a longer email message, or would like to write up the first draft of a new blog post. After all, I don’t want to develop carpal tunel syndrome. I’ll leave that to the younger idiots, er, I mean, deaf people who have become addicted to thumb-typed IM conversations (an option, I’ll point out, that simply isn’t available for every conversation because not everyone uses IM … not even all deaf people).

If there were a way to have a small, portable key board as an accessory–something that would be easier to touch-type on with two hands without worrying as much about possible injury, but that would still be light and compact–then that would free me up to use the sidekick as an actual PHONE for live phone conversations. I have NEVER used my sidekick for a live conversation (because I refuse to thumb-type for that sort of thing). Given that so many places still don’t have TTYs in public phone booths, that would be a real convenience to have. Plus the other possible uses I mentioned.

So my question is: will the new sidekick allow for plugging in a keyboard? Or, are you aware of ANY text-oriented phone (ie, something with good text messaging, emails, web browsing, yada yada) that would have that feature? Or of any plans from T-Mobile to develop something?

    Thanks!

    Andrea:
Treos, BlackBerries, and most Windows Mobile devices will allow you to use infrared (IR) or Bluetooth keyboards. This ability has been around for a long time, especially on the Palm platform. You can easily find nice compact folding keyboards online that work with one of those pagers mentioned. I believe there are even some Windows Mobile devices that will accept USB keyboards. There is even a laser “virtual” keyboard available!

Kim: Spam filtering can be easily done by using an external email address such as Gmail (which just added IMAP support for free). Video playback support is supposedly coming in a future OS update.

Gally82: I doubt that older Sidekicks will get the latest OS. Historically, people have had to purchase the newest SK’s to get the latest OS features. As for spam filtering, older SK’s can also use external email addresses like mentioned above.

    Hi,
I’d like to know whether or not the Sidekick LX has the same email server and domain (tmail.com) or if it uses a different one. Someone told me it uses RIM servers, but I can’t find confirmation. Thanks!

Oh, another thing - I forgot to add in my comments… I understand that it’s possible to use spam filtering via Gmail or other email carriers. But am I the only one that finds it outrageous that TMobile refuses to accept responsibility for spam filtering? AOL does it. Earthlink does it. Many corporations do it for their internal e-mail. T-Mobile is a major e-mail provider, if you consider how many Sidekicks are in active use. Why the blankety-blank can’t they do it too?

admin-ok, spam filtering…you are right about an external email address, but I am speaking of Tmail email system. That’s what I want to know.

I should have clarified on spam filtering earlier. me bad.

    Moi:
The LX has the same email/domain as previous Sidekicks (tmail.com). Why would they change?

There are some phones that offer what is called BlackBerry Connect - this offers a non RIM phone to use BlackBerry servers for email. This is generally used in an enterprise (business) environment. The Sidekick is not an enterprise device, so it probably will never have BlackBerry email.

Also as for the spam filtering on Sidekick/ tmail.com emails, you’re out of luck. T-Mobile and Danger seem to be taking the position that the answer is to change your username. This is something you need to complain to T-Mobile about. Vote with your wallet, tell them you’re leaving for a different device and carrier because of their nonexistent spam handling. *shrug*

Sidekick LX fonts sizes are still too smalllllll and not any better than the former sidkick devices. Am disappointed on the fonts size. :((
